Pre 1840 

        Why was the Treaty Made

 

The people wanted a treaty for trading the Pakeha would give nails,blankets,Muskets and bibles while the Maori gave Flax,seals,whales,trees,food and land.

 

Maori wanted the muskets because they wanted to be the strongest tribe in the war. Maori would also receive bibles because knowledge was power and many maori were interested in Christianity. Nails and blankets were popular to trade .

 

Pakeha would get such things as whales where all parts of the creature which would be used for clothes, umbrellas and perfume. Seals Could also make Different things because they were easy to kill. Other things that the Maori would give pakeha were flax,trees, food and land.

Facts about the Treaty:

 

(1)The treaty of Waitangi 

Was signed in Feb.6 1840 

(2).There were 500+ chiefs who signed the treaty including 13 women

(3).Hone Heke the first person to signed the treaty on february 6 1840

(4) there are two version , English and maori

And five copies.

(5)The first capital of New Zealand was russel.

(6) Edwards william and Henry william  translated the treaty in te reo Maori 

(7)The Māori who agreed to sign did so because they wanted the British to govern, which means to make laws about behaviour. Many people today believe that most Māori would not have signed the Treaty if the Māori version had used ‘rangatiratanga’ for ‘sovereignty’.

(8)Some Māori were pressured into bad land deals with the Crown. The Treaty gave the Crown exclusive rights to buy Māori land. This was known as pre-emption. It was occasionally waived to allow private parties to buy land – one such period resulted in large areas of land being bought by settlers in and around Auckland.

The Treaty Of Waitangi

 

 In 1250, Māori were the first to arrive in New Zealand, journeying in canoes from Hawaiki about 1,000 years ago. Then Polynesians people came to New Zealand in Aotearoa where the Maori people were. And for over 500 years, Maori had Aotearoa all to themself.In in the 1790s, a Maori person named Pākehā who came to hunt whales and seals.1769.But then the Maori saw something big from the distance, a big boat, then the Maori asked “What is that BIG thing in the distances” they asked. Then another Maori said “it’s a Boat” he replied. A British man named Captain cook. 

Some Maori  were worried about other countries,mostly France , taking over New Zealand for themself. In 1831 , thirteen chiefs wrote to the king of England, asking for their protections. In Britain , interest in New Zealand and a lot of people wanted to go to New Zealand to start new lives.some Maoris knew some English and Henry Willam and his son Edwards Willam translated the treaty in te reo Maori just in 1 night. And then the British people invited the Maori chiefs, mostly from the northland and presented them with the treaty of Waitangi.
